Fall Prevention

Fall Prevention: A Broader Plan Than Balance Exercise Alone

Independent educational guide · Updated September 2026

Falls are multifactorial. A useful prevention plan combines physical ability with health and environmental factors.

Strength and balance exercise

CDC recommends exercises that strengthen the legs and improve balance, and NIA similarly includes balance and strength training.

Medication review

Some medicines can cause dizziness or sleepiness. CDC advises asking a doctor or pharmacist to review medicines for fall-related side effects.

Vision, hearing and health

NIA notes that changes in sight and hearing and several health conditions can affect fall risk.

Home safety

Improve lighting, secure hazards, use handrails and grab bars where appropriate, and choose stable footwear.

Important: No home exercise program can guarantee that a person will not fall.
