Better Balance: What Actually Helps?

Independent educational guide · Updated September 2026

“Improve your balance” sounds simple, but balance is an outcome of several systems working together. A useful plan looks beyond one muscle, one nerve or one exercise.

Practice balance

Appropriate balance exercises help train stability in still and moving positions.

Build strength and stay active

Strength supports standing, stepping and recovery. NIA recommends a mix of aerobic, muscle-strengthening and balance activity for older adults.

Check health contributors

Medicines, inner-ear problems and medical conditions can contribute to dizziness and imbalance. New or persistent symptoms deserve evaluation.

Reduce environmental risk

Lighting, handrails, floor hazards, footwear and home setup can all affect fall risk.
