Balance Exercises
Balance Exercises for Seniors: Safe, Simple Starting Points
For older adults, balance practice can be useful when it is appropriate to the person's health and ability. NIA recommends balance activity and emphasizes having support nearby if needed.
Begin with supported movements
- Sit-to-stand from a stable chair.
- Heel-to-toe standing or walking near a counter.
- Weight shifts with a sturdy support surface.
- Single-leg stance only if safe, with support within reach.
Progress by reducing help, not by adding danger
Use shorter hand support, longer holds or slightly more movement only when the current level is controlled. Difficulty should increase gradually.
Get individualized help if you have repeated falls, unexplained dizziness, major gait changes or are unsure whether an exercise is safe for you.
