Walking and Balance: Build Stability Into Everyday Movement

Independent educational guide · Updated September 2026

Walking continuously moves your base of support. Each step requires you to control your body while shifting weight and responding to the environment.

Practice dynamic balance

NIA includes heel-to-toe walking, backward or sideways walking and a “balance walk” among balance exercise examples. These should be scaled to ability and performed with support when needed.

Strength matters

Chair rises and other lower-body strengthening can support functional movement.

Environment matters too

Uneven surfaces, poor lighting, stairs and unsuitable footwear can increase demands on walking. Fall prevention is not only about your body; it also includes reducing hazards.
