Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises: A Practical Starting Guide

Independent educational guide · Updated September 2026

Balance is the ability to maintain stability while still or moving. It can be trained, but safe practice matters more than flashy difficulty.

Common balance exercises

NIA lists examples including standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walking, a balance walk, backward or sideways walking, standing from a chair and wobble-board activities.

Use support when needed

Practice near a sturdy counter, rail, wall or chair if you are at risk of losing balance. Go slowly. Stop if you feel unsafe.

Build a complete routine

Balance is only part of physical function. Strength and aerobic activity also matter. Combine balance work with appropriate leg strengthening and regular movement rather than chasing one “balance trick.”
