Fall Prevention Exercises: Strength, Balance and Safer Progression

Independent educational guide · Updated September 2026

Exercise can be part of fall prevention, but the goal is not to make exercises maximally unstable. The goal is to safely improve the abilities that help with everyday movement.

Balance examples

NIA includes standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walking, balance walking, backward or sideways walking and sit-to-stand practice.

Strength examples

Lower-body strengthening can support standing, stepping and stair use. Choose exercises appropriate to your ability.

Safety principles

Use sturdy support, progress gradually, and seek professional guidance if you are unsure what level is safe. Anyone with repeated falls or unexplained balance symptoms should address those issues clinically as well.
