Better Balance
What Causes Poor Balance? Common Contributors and When to Get Help
Poor balance is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. It can have multiple contributors, and those contributors may overlap.
Possible contributors
NIA lists medications, inner-ear problems, alcohol and medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and problems involving vision, thyroid function, nerves or blood vessels among possible causes of dizziness and balance problems.
Fall risk is also multifactorial
Age-related changes, muscle loss, gait problems, vision/hearing changes, foot problems and postural drops in blood pressure can contribute to falls.
Seek medical evaluation for new or persistent dizziness, vertigo, faintness, blurred vision, repeated falls, sudden changes or symptoms that worry you. A website cannot determine the cause.
Where exercise fits
If exercise is appropriate for you, strength and balance training may improve physical function. But exercise should not be used to explain away symptoms that need diagnosis.
