Better Balance
Proprioception and Balance: What the Term Actually Means
Proprioception is the body's sense of position and movement. It contributes to balance, but it is one part of a larger system that also uses vision, the inner ear, strength and nervous-system processing.
Why the concept matters
When you shift weight or step onto a new surface, sensory information helps your nervous system estimate where your body is and adjust movement.
Why it should not be oversimplified
Commercial products sometimes turn a real concept into a single-cause explanation. Balance problems can come from many sources, so “proprioception” should not become a catch-all diagnosis.
Training it
Balance tasks that alter stance, surface, movement or visual input can change the sensory demands of an exercise. Progression should be appropriate to the person's ability and fall risk.
