Balance Exercises at Home: How to Practice More Safely
Home balance practice works best when the environment is part of the exercise plan.
Set up the space
- Clear loose rugs and clutter.
- Use good lighting.
- Keep a sturdy counter, wall or chair within reach.
- Wear stable footwear or use a safe, grippy surface when appropriate.
Choose controlled movements
Heel-to-toe work, chair rises, supported weight shifts and short bouts of backward or sideways walking are examples found in NIA guidance. Do not copy advanced instability drills simply because they look challenging.
Consistency beats novelty
A small repeatable routine is more useful than a collection of difficult exercises you avoid.
