Balance Exercises
Strength and Balance Exercises: Why You Often Need Both
Balance is not separate from strength. Standing up, stepping, correcting a stumble and climbing stairs all require muscular force as well as control.
Useful strength patterns
Depending on ability, chair rises, supported calf raises, controlled step-ups and other lower-body exercises can complement balance work. Choose a level you can perform with good control.
Add balance-specific practice
NIA recommends a mix of aerobic, muscle-strengthening and balance activity. Pair strength exercises with supported standing, heel-to-toe work or other appropriate balance challenges.
Do not ignore symptoms
If weakness or unsteadiness is new, rapidly worsening or associated with dizziness, faintness, pain or neurological symptoms, seek medical evaluation.
